Mary Worcester Newell grew up in Ohio. Although she did not declare herself an artist until well into her teens, she recalls an early event that started her thinking about art. Her family was discussing the art of John Singer Sargent, who was her great grandparents’ cousin. The question asked, “Did Sargent waste his talent by painting portraits?” She did not have an answer at that time, but never forgot the conversation or the question. |
