|The three ranch hands are working their
way through a remote area of the ranch searching for strays that were
missed in the fall gather. Their gesture and motion are important
elements in the composition. As one can see, the lead horse and
rider are cautiously making their way through the area. An
attentive and sure-footed horse of this nature is truly a prized
possession. Meanwhile, the other riders are more
concerned with watching out for the lost strays. There is a
genuine display of responsiveness and great teamwork!
Enigmatic and mysterious qualities inherent in the landscape are brought about by the artistís use of soft light, bold brushwork, color and texture. Chiaroscuro (the modeling of light and shadow) bear the illusion of three-dimensional form and space on the two-dimensional surface. In portraying many American cowboys, who are the embodiment of strength and tenacity, a sense of calm and quiet composure is often revealed. A spontaneous and subjective approach is important for expressing ones self visually and for rendering the perception of the western themes.
